Aluminium and glass works coordinated with facade consultants and architects

We coordinate aluminium and glass works with facade consultants and architects, so the design requirements stay clear as they move from the architectural drawings to shop drawings, fabrication and installation.

Start from the issue that represents the project now

The review can start at any stage, but it must be clear which document represents the project's current status. Send what you have of:

  • Architectural drawings
  • Facade elevations
  • Sections
  • Facade details
  • Specifications
  • Window / door schedules
  • Glass schedules
  • The BOQ, if available
  • The latest revisions and project comments
  • Specified systems or materials

Keep the design intent as the details develop

Facade divisions, opening sizes, design lines, finishes and glass positions can shift as the project moves from general drawings to execution details. Reviewing these elements keeps what shapes the architecture visible while the aluminium and glass works develop, especially where they meet cladding, openings, roofs or neighbouring finishes. For the quality standards and the Saudi Building Code we follow in that review, see quality standards and the Saudi Building Code.

Review drawings and specifications as one reference

A drawing may fix where an element sits, while the specifications set the material or performance requirements, and the schedules and details add the sizes and divisions. Reviewing these documents together makes it easier to spot:

  • differences in sizes or divisions
  • a drawing that conflicts with a schedule or detail
  • unclear requirements for the system or the glass
  • points that need a decision or an approval

When a conflict appears, it is identified and raised to the authorised party before the next stage relies on it.

Resolve the junctions between facade systems

The most sensitive details usually appear where two systems or materials meet in the same area: curtain wall against cladding, structural glazing against other facade elements, doors and windows against the architectural openings, or skylights against the roof build-up. For the limits of each system and when to choose it, see glass facades compared: curtain wall, structural glazing or cladding.

How do you make sure the latest revision is the one in use?

By reviewing every change before earlier shop drawings, quantities or fabrication information are used again. A new revision to sizes, divisions, the system, the glass or the finish can affect more than one document or stage, so its effect is checked first and only what it touches is updated. The next stage then rests on the current issue.

Evaluate alternatives (value engineering) before approval

When the system, glass or finish is specified in the project documents, it stays the reference until a change is approved under the project's procedures. When an alternative is proposed, its technical data and its effect on the aluminium and glass scope can be reviewed, while final approval stays with the consultant, the owner or the approving authority. The same applies to glass: the choice depends on the application, the system, where it is used and the performance required. Where the project specifies a material or glass standard, it is reviewed with the consultant against what the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) adopts. Reflective, tinted and Low-E glass are treatments chosen by facade orientation, sun intensity and the privacy required, never by colour alone. See tempered glass and architectural glass.

Move to fabrication detail once the information is ready

When the project needs a level of detail closer to fabrication, our technical office and shop drawings take over. That can include shop drawings, coordinating sizes with the openings and facades, a material take-off, fabrication information, and updating the information when approved revisions are issued.

Final approval of drawings, materials and systems stays with the parties authorised under the project's procedures. Once the information is complete, it moves on to fabrication, execution and quality control.

Frequently asked questions

How does Qusoor Al-Sultan handle the consultant's drawings?

It reviews the drawings, specifications and details available, and flags early anything in the sizes or systems that needs clarifying before the shop drawings and fabrication rely on it.

What if the drawings conflict with a schedule or a detail?

The conflict is identified and raised as a request for information (RFI) to the authorised party before the next stage relies on it, instead of building fabrication on an unresolved assumption. It usually shows up as different sizes or divisions between the drawing and the window / door schedules or facade details, and when a new revision is issued, the shop drawings and quantities are reviewed according to its effect.

Which junctions between systems need the closest review?

Four above all: curtain wall facades with aluminium cladding, structural glazing with the other facade elements, doors and windows with the architectural openings, and skylights with the roof build-up. The most sensitive details usually appear there, so they are reviewed before shop drawings and fabrication rely on them; see the role of our technical office.

Who gives the final approval when an alternative is proposed?

The consultant, the owner or the approving authority, according to the project's procedures. Qusoor Al-Sultan reviews the alternative's technical data and its effect on the aluminium and glass scope, but a system, glass or finish specified in the project documents stays the reference until a change is approved.

Which documents should a consultant send first?

Whichever issue represents the project now: architectural drawings, facade elevations, sections and details, specifications, window, door and glass schedules, the BOQ if available, and the latest revisions with the project comments. Not everything is needed at the start, as long as it is clear which revision is current.
